Jack Edward Stanley, 76, of Poteau, Oklahoma passed away June 24, 2009. He was born July 30, 1932 in Logan, West Virginia to I.T. and Ann (Howard) Stanley. Jack graduated in 1950 from Man High School and from West Virginia University in 1954. At WVU Jack was an active member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. Following graduation from WVU Jack served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force for 3 1/2 years and was stationed in Japan. After serving in the military Jack returned to WVU to work on his masters in Accounting and met Virginia Massengale. On August 29, 1959 they were married in Hugo, Oklahoma. They returned to West Virginia where Jack worked for Wierton Steel as an accountant then in June 1960 moved to Poteau and Jack established his own accounting firm. For 40 years Jack built his practice and was involved in the community in many ways before his retirement in September of 2000. Jack was a member of the Oklahoma Public Accountancy Association and his Oklahoma Public Accounting License was #87. His community involvement included Rotary International, First United Methodist Church of Poteau where he served as Finance Chairman for 25 years and 7 years on the Board of Trustees of the Southeastern Public Library System of Oklahoma. He was also a member of the Poteau Chamber of Commerce, the Gideons, and Secretary/Treasurer of the LeFlore County Democratic Party. Jack was also a member of Poteau Masonic Lodge #46 and a 32nd degree Mason of the McAlester Scottish Rite and member of Bedouin Shrine Temple of Muskogee. One of Jack’s favorite activities through the years was coaching girls softball.
In addition to his wife, Virginia, Jack is also survived by two daughters, Deborah Stanley Jarrett (Jerry) of Cumming, Georgia and Denise Stanley Sullivan (Scott) of Oklahoma City, and three grandchildren, Harper Lee Jarrett and Carter Stanley Jarrett of Cumming, Georgia and Delaney Claire Sullivan of Oklahoma City. Many cousins and extended family in West Virginia also survive him.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, June 27, 2009, First United Methodist Church in Poteau with the Rev. Greg Tener officiating. Interment will be at a later date in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Hugo, Oklahoma. Service are under the direction of Grace Manor Funeral Home of Poteau.
